On November 24th, the Northeast Vikings hosted the Central Lancers at the Charles Martin Super-site, kicking off Thanksgiving Day with the annual Turkey Bowl. After previously suffering a Public League Championship loss to the Vikings, the Lancers were granted an opportunity for revenge, and as usual, the highly anticipated game attracted large crowds. Central’s alumni and students filled the bleachers, and the presence of Central’s fans, including an energetic student section, generated an ebullient atmosphere.
The Central Lancers were forced to play without captains Blake Schwartz (276) and Tavion Rogers (276). After one half of play, the Lancers were down 26-14. The team came out of halftime with the intention to make a spectacular comeback, and indeed, in the second half, the Lancer defense was stingy. Furthermore, by allowing only one touchdown in the second half, the defense provided the offense an opportunity to capitalize. Late in the 4th quarter, Gerrit Roscioli (276) threw a spectacular pass to Skyler Jahn (276) in the end-zone, making the score 32-26. Following the touchdown, the Lancers attempted an onside kick, but failed to recover, resulting in the Northeast Vikings running the remaining time off the clock in order to secure the six point victory.
Although the Lancers lost the game, their effort and season cannot be overlooked. The team dominated to an undefeated regular season and, despite injuries, made it to the Public League Championship. Head Coach Richard Drayton was rewarded by winning coach of the year in the public league as well.
