The Central baseball team had their first scrimmage on Friday, and jumped right into the season, red hot with a 5-0 win over Swenson. The pitching staff boasted a combined seven pitcher no-hitter with 1-2-3 innings from Jon Bautista (279) and Rawyn Mercato (277). On the offensive side, Central had a slightly slow start, but had big hits from Abe Barash (277), and Nick Ocasio (276) that sparked a three run fourth inning. Unlike last year, Swenson is expected to be fairly competitive, so a win means more now than it has in years past. Three days later, the regular season started with a 13-0 victory for Central against Gamp, followed by a spectacular comeback 10-7 win against their rival Northeast High School; who are expected to be one of the best teams this year. Although Central has yet to be put up against powerhouses like Franklin Towne Charter, Frankford, and Esperanza, a better start to the 2017 season would be almost impossible. Even though it is early, this year’s team looks primed for a deep playoff run, unlike last year’s team who lost in the quarter final round of the Public League Playoffs.
