As the school year winds down, the Central family mourns the loss of one of its most beloved members: Officer Regina Rankin. Officer Rankin, who had worked at Central since 2013, the same year that President McKenna joined the school’s ranks, is best remembered by many for her bright, contagious smile as well as her friendly, compassionate demeanor. Officer Rankin not only kept the students safe and the metal detector lines flowing, but also cultivated a close friendship with many of the students she interacted with, especially as sponsor of the Animation Club. Always eager to wish students a pleasant morning and to provide them with an array of delicious Girl Scout Cookies, Officer Rankin will be missed by the many lives she touched throughout her time at Central.
Officer Rankin passed in her sleep on Friday, June 16. As a way to commemorate her role both in and out of the school community, Central students and staff created a banner adorned with small notes and messages to express both their gratitude and love for Officer Rankin.
Reflections spanned both memories of morning scan-ins and late afternoon lunch period conversations, with staff members such as Ms. Harrington, Central’s assistant principal, explaining that, “Officer Rankin was my friend. Her friendship was a blessing to me. We shared so many secrets and with just a look she could brighten up my day. She brought happiness to all who knew her. She always had a kind word to say and a shoulder to lean on. Even though she is not here, I know that she is still keeping an eye on all of us and will guide us when we need it the most.” Officer Rankin will be greatly missed.
The memorial services will be held on June 23, 2017 from 10:00 – 11:00 AM at the New Central Baptist Church on 2139 Lombard Street, 19146. The interment will be held at Fernwood Cemetery, 6501 E. Baltimore Avenue, Lansdowne, PA 19050. All attendees are asked to wear white to the service to commemorate Officer Rankin’s bright spirit.
