On February 9, 2020, the 92nd Academy Awards ceremony will commence at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. The Oscars have 24 different categories for nominations every year. This year the Academy of Motion Arts Picture Arts and Science decided to make their nominees severely lack diversity. Most of the nominees are extremely white and mostly men. Why is this?
19 out of the 20 actors nominated for the Oscar are white.
The Academy of Motion Arts Picture Arts and Science nominated only one person of color: Cynthia Erivo for her role in Harriet. Where are all the other actors of color? Where is the nomination for Awkwafina’s act in The Farwell? The Hollywood Foreign Press Association was able to see the talent at the Golden Globes. Where is the nomination for Jennifer Lopez in The Hustlers? The Broadcast Film Critics were able to see her talent at the 25th Critic’s Choice Awards.
5 out of 5 of the nominees for Best Director are men.
The Academy of Motion Arts Picture Arts and Science nominated no women for their directing capabilities. In 2019 alone, there was an impressive amount of female-directed films that will be receiving not be receiving recognition at the Oscars. Where is the nomination for Greta Gerwig’s Little Women? While yes, they did nominate her for the best-adapted screenplay, why is it that she is not recognized for her directing skills? Where is the nomination for Céline Sciamma’s Portrait of a Lady on Fire? Her work is being snubbed.
Despite the Academy of Motion Arts Picture Arts and Science goal made in 2016 to double the number of women and diverse members by 2020, the academy’s nominations cease to reflect that. It’s shameful that these films, women, and people of color will not be fairly recognized at the 92nd Oscars and embarrassing that the Academy has done so little to achieve and properly represent their goal.
